HELPFUL HINTS

Here’s a few helpful hints to make the transition to your pups new home
better for you and your new pup.

DAYTIME

We suggest crate training your puppy, while not home. Pups feel secure in their crates or pet taxis and can stay out of trouble. It needs to be big enough for the pup to stand and turn around. Leave a blanket, stuffed animal and something with your smell on it (like an old T-shirt). Leave classical music playing. It relaxes and makes the pup feel like someone is home. Don’t put food and water in crate until pup is trained. Boredom leads to excessive eating and drinking all day. Puppies can’t hold it until you come home; therefore, lay in their urine all day.

NIGHT TIME

Let puppy sleep in its crate and cover with a blanket or towel so it won’t be disturbed. Before bed make sure pup goes outside and does it’s business. No water before bed. If your pup cries at first, this is normal. It’s probably due to separation anxiety from it’s mom and siblings. Don’t give in and let your pup out each time it cries. This reinforces the pup’s desire to cry. Sleeping with you can be dangerous! Pups fall off beds or can be rolled on and suffocate!

BATHING

Make bath time as relaxing as possible for the pup. Avoid loud noises and speak in a low soothing voice during bathing to comfort them as much as possible. Pups can not have flea shampoo or dip until 6 months old. We use GREEN APPLE Dawn dish detergent. The vinegar in the apple kills fleas on contact. Use caution around the eyes! We also use Suave Lavender conditioner following shampoo to make them smell good and
make their coat soft.

FEEDING

We feed most of our pups Puppy Chow Small Bites twice daily. Amounts vary depending on your pup. Most are eating solid foods. If you have a tiny pup or a tea cup, we recommend soaking the food in warm water until moist and sprinkle a small amount of sugar on top for a treat. It also gives your pup a sugar boost to help with hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. Also, use the chicken flavor canned food in the Science Diet brand.

CAR SICKNESS

It’s normal for your pup to get motion sickness when traveling at first. Try to let your pup look out the window. After you travel and your pups get sick give your pup a sugar boost to keep blood sugar up. Mix some water and a teaspoon of sugar in a syringe and open your pups mouth the usually enjoy the treat. If your pup is lethargic this is extremely important to get the sugar boost immediately!!

HOUSE BREAKING

Take your pup out 20 to 30 minutes after each meal and every two hours through the day when possible. Give your pup a treat (Beggin’ Strip) if your pup does it’s business and lots of positive praise. They get very excited over your praise!! Use one word, like “PEEPEE”, to let them know its not outside play time but time to do business. Then bring the pup inside after giving the treat. Have play time. Pups also need to go out first thing in the morning and before bedtime, these times are important to remember in training.

DISCIPLINE

Use aluminum cans with rocks inside to shake when pups do something bad. This gets their attention immediately and the sound drives them crazy! Use a deep voice and simple command like “bad dog”. You get their attention and your displeasure hurts their pride. This is useful when training. It’s important for your pup to have toys and play time with you. If not they become bored and get into mischief. Some of our favorite toys are baby pacifiers. It feels good to their gums when teething and makes really cute pictures.

Please remember to be patient and consistent with you new pup.
Its like having a new baby!
